Rohingya Crisis Hits 9 Years

Nine years after the influx that began in August 2017, the burden of the Rohingya refugee crisis in Bangladesh is growing heavier. With the Rohingya population in the sprawling camps of Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char in Swandip swelling to nearly 1.2 million, international donor fatigue has reached a critical tipping point.

The latest UN Joint Response Plan requested a significantly reduced budget, acknowledging that global attention has shifted to other crises. Funding shortfalls have already forced the World Food Programme (WFP) to slash vital food rations, leaving vulnerable families struggling with malnutrition.

Humanitarian leaders are warning that unless the international community honours its financial commitments and pursues meaningful diplomatic efforts for safe repatriation to Myanmar, the crisis will spiral into an irreversible humanitarian catastrophe, heavily straining local Bangladeshi host communities in the process.

Fertilizer Crisis Deepens

Bangladesh's agricultural sector is facing severe pressure as a worsening fertilizer shortage threatens the critical Aman paddy season. Farmers in northern agricultural hubs allege that market prices remain artificially inflated by local middlemen.

Government officials have cited distribution issues and blamed local dealer syndicates for creating an "artificial crisis" through hoarding and price gouging. Local newspapers report, however, reveal a structural failure.

Systemic shortfalls are reportedly being driven by the ongoing nationwide gas shortages, which have severely disrupted domestic fertilizer production lines. In response to mounting pressure, the government recently authorized massive emergency imports to stabilize the market.

Trump Administration Plans to Revoke Visas

In a major policy shift, the US Trump administration is reportedly advancing a controversial plan to revoke the temporary non-immigrant visas of approximately 200,000 foreign nationals currently seeking asylum in the United States.

This sweeping directive aims to drastically reduce the number of migrants legally allowed to reside in the country while their asylum claims are being processed in heavily backlogged immigration courts.

The proposed policy has sparked widespread panic and concern among immigrant communities globally, including many South Asian nationals. Civil rights organizations and immigration advocates are preparing for immediate legal battles, arguing that the mass revocation violates both international human rights obligations and domestic due process.

The move marks a significant escalation in the administration's hardline approach to tightening border security and restricting legal immigration pathways.

CPD Projects Tk 1.3-1.4L Crore Revenue Shortfall

Illustration: The Business Standard

The Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), an independent think tank in Bangladesh, has projected a massive revenue shortfall ranging between Tk 1.3 to 1.4 lakh crore for the current fiscal year.

During a briefing on Monday, the CPD strongly criticised the government’s fiscal management, citing a noticeable "lack of political courage" to implement essential but difficult structural reforms. It warned that the failure to widen the tax net, curb illicit financial outflows, and reform the banking sector will result in a severely delayed economic recovery.

The CPD emphasised that reliance on borrowing to bridge this massive deficit will only fuel inflation, disproportionately affecting lower-income citizens while the structural inefficiencies constraining the national economy remain largely unaddressed by policymakers.

The High Court has upheld the death sentences of two individuals convicted in the brutal murder of Nusrat Jahan Rafi. The High Court, however, commuted the death sentences of four other convicts to life imprisonment and acquitted 10 others, who had also been sentenced to death by the trial court, of the charges in the case.

The Feni madrasa student was set on fire in 2019 after she refused to withdraw a sexual harassment complaint against her principal SM Siraj-Ud-Dowlah.

Her murder sparked nationwide outrage and unprecedented protests demanding systemic changes to protect women and students.
