Bangladesh and Spain have agreed to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, skilled migration, tourism and cultural exchanges while accelerating pending bilateral agreements.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam and Spanish State Secretary for Foreign and Global Affairs Diego Martínez Belío reached the understanding in Madrid on Wednesday, a Foreign Ministry release said on Thursday.

Both sides explored business-to-business engagement, export diversification, trade exhibitions, the creative economy, arts, sports diplomacy and tourism.

Highlighting nationwide sports promotion to foster people-to-people ties, Shama also stressed expediting a proposed memorandum of understanding on cultural cooperation.

Calling the Bangladeshi diaspora a bilateral bridge, she urged safe, orderly and legal migration pathways for skilled workers and Spain's participation in the European Union's Talent Partnerships initiative, while reiterating zero tolerance for human trafficking and migrant smuggling.

Diego Martínez Belío reaffirmed Madrid's readiness to strengthen economic, cultural and people-to-people ties.

Both sides agreed to maintain high-level exchanges and hold the second Foreign Office Consultations soon, after Shama expressed condolences to bereaved families over Wednesday's Toledo train accident.
