Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam said that bus fares were increased by 17 poisa per kilometre across Bangladesh on Tuesday. The decision followed Secretariat meetings where transport owners demanded a 20-poisa hike citing maintenance costs, before the government approved the lower rate.
Transport operators charged passengers significantly above the government-approved rates across terminals in Gabtoli, Sayedabad and Mohakhali on Tuesday. On the Dhaka-Mymensingh route, bus staff demanded Tk 330, exceeding the fixed rate by Tk 51.28, while interdistrict fares from Rajshahi to Bogura increased by 20 per cent.
Within Dhaka, several city services raised the minimum Tk 10 fare to Tk 15 before the official gazette appeared. Conductors told boarding commuters that 'fares higher today' along routes in Farmgate and Asad Gate, triggering disputes as passengers challenged the arbitrary collection of an additional Tk 5.
Shaikh Rabiul Alam said bus operators charging more than government-fixed rates could have their route permits cancelled. The minister said authorities would impose financial penalties and reconsider future permit issuances for non-compliant transport owners, adding that railway fares would remain unchanged to prevent further public hardship.

A Dhaka court sent Maksuda Islam, the first wife of Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam, to jail on Tuesday for allegedly abetting the suicide of his second wife. Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain passed the detention order after completing her one-day police remand.
The investigation into the unnatural death of 19-year-old Mariam Khatun was formally transferred to the Detective Branch on Monday. The victim's father filed the initial lawsuit at the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, accusing the parliamentarian and his first wife following the recovery of her body.
Following the lawmaker's expulsion over moral turpitude, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami initiated organisational efforts to position Maulana Abdur Rahman as an alternative candidate for the local parliamentary seat. The party intends to formally announce the nomination if the Election Commission officially declares the constituency vacant.
Jamaat central executive council member Mohammad Izzat Ullah said the party formally requested the Parliament Secretariat to strip the disgraced lawmaker of his parliamentary status. He added that Abdur Rahman would successfully contest any potential by-election to maintain the party's regional stronghold.
