Bangladesh and Japan bilateral trade reaches 3.31 billion dollars

Bilateral trade between Bangladesh and Japan exceeded 3.31 billion dollars during the previous fiscal year, driven by rising Japanese demand for competitively priced ready-made garments. The commercial milestone highlights a consistent decade-long expansion in cross-border economic relations between the two Asian nations.

According to Export Promotion Bureau data, total two-way trade exceeded 3.31 billion dollars in fiscal year 2025, up from 3.12 billion dollars the preceding year. The nation previously exported 1.9 billion dollars worth of goods in fiscal year 2023, benefiting from duty-free access for domestic knitwear products.

Japan-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry immediate past president Tareq Rafi Bhuiyan Jun said domestic manufacturers possess significant potential to increase exports to Japan. He said the Asian nation could eventually rival Western markets as a primary destination for Bangladeshi products.

The sustained commercial growth has positioned Japan as the ninth-largest global export destination and the second-largest Asian market for Bangladesh. The bilateral economic relationship also remains a crucial source of foreign direct investment for the country.

Middle East conflict threatens Bangladeshi migrant employment and remittances

Thousands of Bangladeshi migrant workers remain unable to join their employment in Saudi Arabia this month following intensified Houthi attacks. The ongoing Middle East conflict has disrupted overseas labour markets, raising domestic concerns regarding national economic stability and future remittance inflows.

An estimated eight million Bangladeshi migrants currently work across the Middle East. The nation received $32.82 billion in remittances in 2025, while the Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit classified up to 74 per cent of the overseas workforce as semi-skilled or low-skilled labourers.

Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit Executive Director Professor Tasneem Siddiqui said the heavy reliance on Middle Eastern markets leaves the domestic economy highly vulnerable. She said the government must diversify employment destinations across multiple regions to protect the country from recurring geopolitical crises.

To address the vulnerability, Ministry Joint Secretary Salahuddin Ahammad said authorities initiated projects to expand destination markets and strengthen vocational certification processes. The government plans to establish 50 additional training centres by 2028 to develop skilled manpower for alternative international destinations.

Bangladesh exports to South America reach 195 million dollars

Bangladesh exported 195.17 million dollars worth of goods to 11 South American nations during the first quarter of the current fiscal year. The government stepped up efforts to diversify export destinations through trade fairs and the promotion of non-traditional products.

According to official figures, ready-made garments generated 154.63 million dollars, representing nearly 79.2 per cent of total regional shipments. Brazil emerged as the largest continental destination with 70.82 million dollars, followed by Chile and Peru across the July-September period.

Export Promotion Bureau Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Mohammad Hasan Arif said excessive dependence on apparel shipments could expose national earnings to external economic shocks. He said exporters should conduct advance research before participating in international exhibitions to achieve better commercial outcomes.

To accelerate product diversification, the government recently facilitated the participation of four domestic manufacturing companies at a Brazilian trade fair. The participating businesses showcased leather goods, jute items and handicrafts to establish commercial contacts with prospective South American buyers.

Government waives experience requirement for state bank chief executives

The government revised its appointment policy for state-owned commercial bank chief executives on Monday, allowing authorities to waive specific experience requirements. The Financial Institutions Division amendment applies to managing directors at six public lenders following recent executive dismissals.

Previous regulations required candidates to possess two years of experience in positions immediately below the chief executive role alongside a 20-year banking career. Under the revised framework, the government can waive the two-year mandate for candidates demonstrating special skills and professional qualifications.

The updated administrative guidelines maintain existing criteria regarding the three-year contractual tenure and the mandatory master's degree requirement without any third-division academic records. The government will continue nominating candidates while respective bank boards finalise appointments following Bangladesh Bank approval.

Centre for Policy Dialogue distinguished fellow Fahmida Khatun said state-owned banks require competent professionals and must remain entirely free from political influence to be successfully turned around. She questioned why the administrative policy was amended at this particular moment.

NBR plans uniform 15 per cent VAT by 2030

The National Board of Revenue plans to phase out tax exemptions and implement a uniform 15 per cent value-added tax rate by 2030. An official delegation recently presented the reform proposal to an International Monetary Fund technical committee in Washington.

The revenue authority proposed maintaining existing exemptions for essential food items, education, healthcare and public transportation services. Currently, over 500 goods and services benefit from reduced rates ranging between 2 per cent and 10 per cent, causing over Tk 1.29 lakh crore in revenue losses.

Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said meeting specific fiscal conditions remains necessary to secure new loan assistance from the multilateral lender (NBR plans single 15_ VAT rate by 2030 to meet IMF conditions 5.pdf). He said officials must fulfil international requirements through ongoing bilateral negotiations.

A high-level International Monetary Fund delegation will visit Dhaka in November to evaluate the proposed revenue framework. Following a stalled 2015 initiative, authorities anticipate potential objections from local business communities regarding the uniform taxation strategy ahead of its implementation.
