A new minimum wage board has been formed by the government to set the pay floor for workers in the readymade garment (RMG) industry, bringing together representatives from employers, labour groups, and independent members.
The Ministry of Labour and Employment announced the appointments today through two separate notifications, acting under the provisions of the Bangladesh Labour Act, 2006 (as amended in 2026).
In one notification, the ministry named ABM Shamsuddin, a director of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), to represent factory owners, while Babul Akhter, general secretary of the Bangladesh Garment and Industrial Workers Federation, was appointed to represent garment workers.
A second notification appointed Dhaka University Public Administration Professor Dr Mosleh Uddin Ahmad as an independent member. Alongside him, Asif Ayub, joint secretary-general of the Bangladesh Employers' Federation, will serve as an employers' representative, and Anwar Hossain, president of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, will serve as a workers' representative.
The ministry's notifications have directed the board's chairman to begin the formal process of determining the new minimum wage for the garment sector in consultation with the appointed employer, worker, and neutral representatives.
