State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishraque Hossain formally resigned from the cabinet during a press conference at the National Press Club on Monday. The lawmaker voluntarily stepped down following a public controversy regarding his involvement in an armed anti-narcotics operation.
The resignation occurred a day after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman directed the state minister to step down. The directive followed widespread criticism after viral video footage emerged showing Ishraque brandishing a pistol during an anti-drug raid in Gendaria on Saturday.
Ishraque apologised if the operation caused unintended distress but maintained he made no procedural errors, adding that he kept the weapon visible purely for personal safety. He said the resulting media narratives had embarrassed the ruling party.
Following his departure from the cabinet, Ishraque said he plans to devote his time to eliminating local drug networks and addressing public issues across the Dhaka-6 constituency. He said the prime minister had kindly agreed after he sought voluntary release to focus on constituency matters.

Bangladesh requested official court verdict copies concerning the reported execution of two Bangladeshi nationals in Saudi Arabia on Monday. Foreign ministry officials sought the judicial records to review the case after seeking information regarding the alleged capital punishment of a male and female expatriate.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is cross-checking prisoner lists sent by Riyadh to verify both individuals. Saudi authorities routinely provide data on detained Bangladeshis to Dhaka, though the government has not yet received detailed information from the affected families.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam said officials will assess the situation once the documents arrive. She said citizens must exercise patience and avoid unverified claims circulating on social media.
Dhaka is awaiting Saudi responses to determine subsequent measures through diplomatic consultations. The state minister said Saudi Arabia remains a vital destination for overseas workers and remittance earnings, describing the bilateral response from Riyadh as 'very positive'.

Government employees will continue receiving allowances at existing rates despite the introduction of the ninth national pay scale, according to a Finance Division notification issued on Monday. The directive applies across ministries, autonomous bodies and state-owned enterprises.
Employees will receive higher basic salaries this month under the new structure approved on 31 August. The framework increased minimum basic pay by 142 per cent to Tk 20,000 for Grade 20 and maximum basic pay to Tk 1,56,000 for Grade 1.
Under the phased schedule, officials in Grade 9 and above receive 40 per cent of the basic increase initially, while lower grades receive 50 per cent. The disbursement relies on online data entry through the integrated budget system, concluding on Tuesday.
Allowances will remain pegged to the previous salary scale as of 30 June 2026 until revised rates take effect. The government decided that updated allowance benefits linked to basic salaries, including house rent, will be fully implemented from 1 January 2028.
