Global food inflation to intensify as supply shocks mount

Global food inflation is poised to accelerate in the coming months and persist into 2027 as compounding supply shocks disrupt distribution. War-related shipping disruptions and El Nino-driven droughts continue to squeeze essential cereal supplies, placing additional pressure on vulnerable consumers globally.

The Food and Agriculture Organization reported its Food Price Index averaged 136 points in September. According to the World Bank, food costs outpaced headline inflation across 22 per cent of the 150 countries it analysed, while independent commodity data showed wheat prices climbed over 30 per cent.

FAO Chief Economist Maximo Torero said multiple supply shocks have placed considerable pressure on food systems, with larger impacts expected throughout next year. He said the cushion from record global grain inventories is wearing thin, making upcoming commodity price increases potentially more pronounced.

Surging oil prices and war premiums have increased freight rates by about 50 per cent on key global routes. Rising food prices heighten the risk of social unrest and could prompt key supplying governments to impose export bans, further exacerbating international agricultural shortages.

Commerce minister expects three-year LDC graduation deferral this month

A decision regarding Bangladesh's request to defer its graduation from the least developed country category is expected within October, Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir said on Monday. The proposed three-year extension aims to strengthen economic preparedness before entering developing-country status.

Bangladesh had passed the United Nations Committee for Development Policy stage and subsequently submitted an extension request to the Economic and Social Council. Muktadir said the European Union and other relevant stakeholders expressed agreement with granting the nation additional time.

Muktadir said graduation had been politically glorified without sufficient attention to the economic and financial challenges involved. He said the government shared a transition action plan with the European Union to build institutional capacity during the requested extension period.

To preserve external market access, the government aims to conclude free trade agreements with up to 10 partner countries during 2026 and 2027. Authorities appointed a chief negotiator for European Union trade talks while advancing procedural work for regional economic integration.

Expatriate remittance inflow registers 13.3 per cent growth

Bangladesh received $10.33 billion in expatriate remittances between 1 July and 17 October, marking a 13.3 per cent year-on-year growth from $9.12 billion. The continued upward trend is expected to support national foreign exchange reserves while strengthening the external economic sector.

According to Bangladesh Bank data, expatriate workers remitted $1.74 billion during the first 17 days of October. The financial figure represents a notable increase from the $1.53 billion recorded during the corresponding period last year, maintaining robust growth across the current fiscal year.

On a single-day count, the country received $117 million in remittances on Saturday alone. Banking sector analysts attributed the steady growth in financial inflows to growing reliance on formal banking channels by expatriate workers sending funds home.

Financial experts also cited stable foreign exchange market conditions as a primary catalyst for the sustained remittance acceleration this year. The robust volume of formal transactions continues to effectively strengthen the broader external economic sector across the ongoing fiscal period.

Middle East crisis adds $4.12 billion to energy costs

Source: Prothom Alo

The Middle East crisis forced Bangladesh to spend an additional $4.12 billion on energy over the past eight months, Prime Minister's Finance and Planning Adviser Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir said on Monday. He said authorities are currently developing Matarbari into an energy hub.

The BGMEA launched an ESG monitoring platform in Dhaka on Monday, with 326 garment factories participating initially. Titumir said low pricing alone cannot ensure global market competitiveness, adding that economic reform programmes include initiatives to ensure five years of continuity in tax policy.

Policy Exchange Bangladesh Chairman M Masrur Reaz said 70 per cent of European and 73 per cent of American buyers prioritise eco-friendly manufacturing. Danish Ambassador Christian Brix Møller said the initiative will strengthen factory competitiveness.

BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan said the association seeks to make ESG adherence mandatory for member factories, adding that discussions will be held with the BKMEA. He said deferring Bangladesh's least developed country graduation would provide apparel exporters critical preparation time to adopt mandatory environmental standards.

Bangladesh needs EU trade access for trillion-dollar economy

To achieve a trillion-dollar economy, Bangladesh must secure European Union trade access and accelerate structural reforms, Danish Ambassador to Bangladesh Christian Brix Moller said on Monday. He addressed business leaders in Dhaka during the formal launch of an industrial monitoring platform.

According to an International Monetary Fund assessment, economic growth is projected at around 3.5 per cent in fiscal year 2027, with warnings that growth could fall below 3.0 per cent without reforms. Moller said a stronger wage system would protect workers and reduce remittance reliance.

Moller said achieving a trillion-dollar economy requires national reconciliation, social healing and a stable parliamentary democracy. He said international investors would hesitate to enter economies experiencing both depressed domestic capital spending and fragile political institutions.

BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan said the association will make environmental reporting mandatory for all members. Policy Exchange Bangladesh Chairman Masrur Reaz said the platform currently covers 326 factories, identifying overlapping audits between trade bodies as causing audit fatigue.
