Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam on Wednesday called for long-term Chinese investment and partnership to help develop Bangladesh's infrastructure, modernise its transport system and enhance port capacity.

He made the call during a meeting with the chairman of China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) in Dhaka, according to a Shipping Ministry press release.

Expressing gratitude to the Chinese government for its continued support, the minister said China's cooperation has played a vital role in Bangladesh's infrastructure development, connectivity expansion and economic progress.

He also said that the government has prioritised modernising overall connectivity, boosting port capacity and building investment-friendly infrastructure.

“Bangladesh is interested in collaborating on future major and mega infrastructure projects of mutual interest,” he said.

The minister urged CRCC to pursue long-term investment and expand its partnership in Bangladesh.

CRCC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Bangladesh's infrastructure development. The company's chairman highlighted its ongoing engagement in the road, railway and maritime sectors and expressed interest in expanding future investments and operations.

The meeting discussed in detail the modernisation and expansion of Mongla Port, development of the proposed Mongla Port Economic Park, construction of strategic highways and bridges, improvement of railway connectivity and potential investments under the public-private partnership framework.

Both sides agreed to explore new areas of cooperation to strengthen bilateral relations, enhance port and connectivity capacity, expand international trade, attract investment and accelerate economic growth.
