ECNEC approves three metro rail projects worth Tk. 2.5 lakh crore

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council approved three metro rail projects on Wednesday involving nearly Tk 2.5 lakh crore. Chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the meeting cleared the development of 68.44 kilometres of lines across Dhaka to expand the capital's mass-transit infrastructure.

The network comprises MRT Line-1, MRT Line-5 Northern Route and MRT Line-5 Southern Route, establishing two east-west corridors and one north-south corridor. The interconnected routes will link Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Purbachal, Mirpur and southern Dhaka, allowing commuters to transfer across lines and reduce road travel.

Official records show per-kilometre costs vary by up to 70 per cent among the three projects, despite Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited executing them all. The Korean-assisted southern route costs Tk 2,645.57 crore per kilometre, whereas the Japanese-funded northern route averages Tk 4,492.42 crore per kilometre.

State Minister for Planning Zonayed Abdur Rahim Saki said Japanese tied financing required specific contractors and products, restricting open tender competition.

Meanwhile, BUET Professor Shamsul Hoque told reporters that the sharp cost gap warranted a transparent explanation because the cheaper southern route actually features a higher proportion of underground track.

Laos suspends work permits and visas for Bangladeshi nationals

Laos has suspended new work permits and labour visas for Bangladeshi nationals from 1 September until 31 December 2026. A directive from the Laotian Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare cited efforts to curb human trafficking and unauthorised recruitment, without specifying why Bangladeshi workers were targeted.

The order prohibits companies and brokers from independently recruiting Bangladeshi citizens, though state-approved priority projects with fixed contractual schedules remain exempt. Employers face fines up to 2.5 million Laotian Kip per unauthorised worker alongside licence revocations, while non-compliant workers face mandatory deportation within 30 days.

According to Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training data, roughly 3,300 Bangladeshi workers received clearance for Laos this year, primarily in construction and manufacturing. The freeze follows recent visa cancellations for 5,000 Bangladeshis in the United Arab Emirates, deepening uncertainty across the country's overseas employment sector.

Saudi Arabia calls reported Mecca attack a 'red line'

Source: BBC & Facebook / Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh

Saudi Arabia has accused Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels of attempting to attack Mecca, Islam's holiest city, sparking outrage and condemnation from countries across the region.

The kingdom on Wednesday described Mecca as a "red line" as it became increasingly drawn into a new front of the Iran war. The Saudi-led coalition spokesperson Turki al-Maliki said the attempted strike was disgraceful,

Houthi military officials, however, rejected it and said they never targeted religious sites and only attacked military infrastructure.

Bangladesh strongly condemned the reported drone attack targeting the Makkah Al-Mukarramah. The foreign ministry on Wednesday said Dhaka maintains complete solidarity with Saudi Arabia, adding that the security and sanctity of the holy sites must remain protected at all times.

Meanwhile, a fact-check showed that the widely circulated 35-second video presented as the Mecca drone interception is false. The verification confirmed that the footage dates to September 2025, when Saudi forces downed an unauthorised aerial object over Medina near the Prophet's Mosque.

Despite the video gaining over six lakh views across social platforms, international news agencies reported that Riyadh provided no photographic evidence substantiating Tuesday's drone interception. Regional allies including Pakistan and Turkey said Saudi Arabia had not requested military assistance under their recently formed mutual defence pact.

Bangladesh will drill 150 new gas wells across the country to resolve domestic shortages, Prime Minister's Office Spokesperson Mahdi Amin said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a briefing marking seven months of the administration, he said a second phase will add another 150 exploration wells.

The government has also planned to construct three new floating liquefied natural gas terminals to expand import capacity. He added that the initiative will increase the number of operational floating storage and regasification units from two to five, with authorities seeking to commission the third terminal before 2028.

Mahdi Amin also said the combined exploration and terminal expansion aims to establish a permanent solution to industrial fuel supply disruptions. Implementation has already started following directives from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, enabling factories to remain fully operational and sustaining broader national economic progress.

Prosecutors filed formal charges at International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Wednesday against eight individuals, including former Dhaka University vice-chancellor ASM Maksud Kamal and academic Zafar Iqbal. The charges involve alleged crimes against humanity linked to attacks on students during the July Uprising.

The accused also include retired Appellate Division Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, Professor AKM Jamal Uddin and four student leaders. Manik, Jamal and student leader Tanbir Hasan Shaikat remain in detention, while the other five individuals are currently listed as fugitives by authorities.

ICT Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim said the accused incited attacks and conspired following political statements on 14 July 2024. The resulting clashes at Dhaka University the following day left over 100 people injured, intensifying the nationwide movement that eventually led to the government's ouster.
