Lionel Messi ended his 21-year international career on Tuesday, playing his final match for Argentina during a 3-0 victory against Benin in Buenos Aires. The 39-year-old forward featured before 85,000 spectators at the Monumental Stadium in an event billed as 'The Last Tango'.
In his record-extending 208th international match, Messi scored his 126th goal through a 71st-minute penalty and provided an assist. The match was halted in the 10th minute for a minute-long ovation before a post-match drone show honoured the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner.
Messi described his retirement as the 'saddest day of my career', saying representing Argentina brought immense pride despite severe World Cup fatigue. Former teammate Neymar paid tribute on social media, saying the world thanks Messi for everything he achieved in football.
Messi concluded his national tenure having secured the 2022 World Cup alongside two Copa America trophies and two runner-up finishes. Although contracted with Inter Miami until 2028, he indicated that he might conclude his club career sooner than anticipated.

Belgian-American scientist Francis Halzen won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics on Tuesday for designing the IceCube Neutrino Observatory in Antarctica, Reuters reported. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences selected the researcher for using polar ice to detect subatomic cosmic particles.
The observatory occupies a cubic kilometre of Antarctic ice reaching depths of 2,500 metres near the South Pole. More than 5,000 sensors track elusive high-energy neutrinos originating from exploding stars, while the award includes 12 million Swedish crowns.
Halzen said receiving the award brought significant relief for his research collaborators after years of anticipation. Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever congratulated Halzen, saying his career unravelled cosmic secrets through minuscule manifestations.
Researchers plan to construct an expanded observatory, IceCube-Gen2, covering eight cubic kilometres of ice by 2033. Halzen said the primary scientific outcomes remain ahead, while the formal presentation ceremony will take place in Stockholm on 10 December.

Gas supply will remain suspended for 10 hours across several Dhaka neighbourhoods on Thursday for emergency pipeline repairs, Titas Gas notified. The shutdown affects residential, commercial and CNG consumers in Mirpur, Agargaon and Shyamoli from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.
According to a Titas notice, the suspension covers Agargaon, western parts of Taltola, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Pirerbagh, Paikpara, Mirpur-10, Mirpur-1, Mirpur 60 feet and areas along the right side of Mirpur to Kallyanpur road. The utility company said pressure may drop in neighbouring localities during maintenance, while expressing regret for the consumer inconvenience.
Titas data revealed that gas shortages in parts of Dhaka have been exacerbated by water entering through holes in damaged pipelines. Officials said lower network pressure allows groundwater to seep into corroded lines, disrupting domestic supply.
The shutdown follows distribution shortfalls, with Titas recording a daily deficit of 500 million cubic feet in July against demand of 2 billion cubic feet. Similar pipeline leaks previously disrupted fuel supplies to Mirpur and Kallyanpur in April.

The Saudi-led coalition intercepted a ballistic missile fired by Yemen's Houthi rebels north of Riyadh on Wednesday, as regional fighting intensified. The incident followed missile and drone strikes on Najran and Jizan airports that damaged facilities and left three people injured.
According to Saudi civil aviation authorities, the airport strikes on Monday caused casualties near the southern border. Meanwhile, military sources reported that clashes killed more than 270 troops and fighters across Yemen within 24 hours, amid battles near strategic Red Sea shipping corridors.
Saudi coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki said air defence units intercepted the projectile launched toward Riyadh. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the group launched drones and missiles at multiple Saudi sites, including Abha airport, striking targets accurately.
Pro-government forces continued counter-offensives to dislodge fighters from coastal areas near the Bab al-Mandab strait to safeguard maritime energy routes. Meanwhile, Pakistan and Turkey pledged to deploy troops to Saudi Arabia under a mutual defence pact as regional security concerns escalated.

President Alamgir said all citizens remain equal, emphasising that no person should face discrimination based on religious identity. He praised institutions such as Notre Dame College and Holy Cross College for maintaining educational standards.
The President assured the delegation of official support in resolving property and administrative challenges, stating that Bangabhaban remains open to all citizens. He urged community representatives to maintain direct communication and take collective initiatives to preserve cultural heritage nationwide.
