Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called for deeper regional cooperation to transform the Bay of Bengal into a zone of shared prosperity on Saturday.

Inaugurating the fifth Bay of Bengal Conversation 2026 at a local hotel in Dhaka, he urged partnerships in trade, energy and maritime connectivity. Delegates from over 100 countries attended the event.

Outlining five-year priorities, the prime minister said the government will employ 100,000 healthcare workers, targeting 80 per cent women. He said Bangladesh also plans to excavate 20,000 kilometres of waterways and plant 250 million trees to strengthen climate resilience.

He said shared geography must become shared prosperity through cooperation anchored in equality and justice. He said Bangladesh believes in dialogue while safeguarding national sovereignty and expanding opportunities for youth across regional markets.

Addressing the refugee situation, the PM said the repatriation of 1.2 million Rohingyas requires sustained global finance and political backing. He said the crisis originated in Myanmar and must end there, as the three-day forum continues through Monday.

Hasina extradition process ongoing without timeline: Indian HC

Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi said on Saturday that Bangladesh's formal request for Sheikh Hasina's extradition is undergoing a structured legal process without a fixed timeline. Speaking at the Bay of Bengal Conversation 2026 in Dhaka, he said Indian courts are handling the matter.

Dinesh said the Indian military did not transport Hasina to Delhi, saying she fled aboard a Bangladeshi aircraft amid the August 2024 uprising. He said refusing her landing permission would have created a different situation, leaving New Delhi little choice as a neighbouring state.

Former Indian Army commander Arun Kumar Sahni said regional stability rests on military sovereignty and trust, expecting neighbouring states to pursue their own national interests.

Bangladesh has requested Hasina's extradition following her death sentence for atrocities committed during the 2024 student protests. Trivedi said bilateral disputes must be resolved through dialogue at appropriate forums, adding that mutual respect and dignity remain essential between both sovereign democratic nations.

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has identified inflation control, banking governance and tax reform as top economic priorities. Speaking at United International University on Saturday, he said restoring macroeconomic stability remains essential to shield households from persistent cost-of-living pressures.

The finance minister said global economic uncertainty has become a normal reality amid sluggish growth, borrowing costs and protectionism. He also said domestic policymakers must rely on accurate, data-driven frameworks to manage volatility as high energy expenses and foreign exchange pressures strain national purchasing power.

Amir Khosru said acknowledging problems remains the initial step towards resolving them. He said tax collection relative to gross domestic product remains inadequate, requiring a simple, technology-driven framework to finance public development needs.

Bangladesh must strengthen export competitiveness rather than relying on trade preferences ahead of least-developed-country graduation. He said the government prioritises transparency and the effective use of every taka in public spending while supporting private investment to generate new employment opportunities.
