Bangladesh repatriated 174 stranded nationals from Libya on Tuesday with another 175 scheduled to return voluntarily from Misrata today under the same humanitarian assistance programme.

The first group arrived at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on a Buraq Air flight arranged jointly by the Bangladesh Embassy in Tripoli and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Among the returnees, 36 had been detained at Tripoli's Tajura Detention Centre after attempting to reach Europe by sea, while 138 chose voluntary repatriation to escape the precarious and uncertain conditions they faced in Libya. At least 41 are reported to be in poor health.

Meeting the citizens at the embassy compound alongside the labour counsellor and first secretary (labour), Ambassador Md Habib Ullah warned against irregular migration, saying illegal routes bring extreme physical, mental and financial harm to individuals, families and society.

He urged them to start afresh with new vigour, follow legal travel channels, raise local awareness and share information to help authorities bring human trafficking rings and brokers to justice.
