The UN General Assembly is set to decide tonight whether to grant Bangladesh a three-year extension of its preparatory period for graduation from the least developed country (LDC) category.
A senior Finance Ministry official told The Daily Star that Bangladesh's and Nepal's deferral requests are on Thursday's agenda for the session starting at 8:00pm Bangladesh time (10:00am New York time), with decision timing unconfirmed.
Although the final decision requires consensus among all member states, the official expressed confidence that both countries would secure full support after positive recommendations at earlier stages.
Following the government's 18 February 2026 request for an extension until 24 November 2029, the Committee for Development Policy took a positive position and the Economic and Social Council recommended on 21 July a decision before 24 November 2026.
Bangladesh argued that global and domestic challenges, including trade volatility, geopolitical tensions, inflationary pressures, the Middle East crisis, energy and supply chain uncertainties and changing international trade conditions, affected its graduation readiness and transition.
