Bangladesh Bank on Monday permitted travellers to purchase tickets for foreign airlines operating domestically using international credit and debit cards, outside their annual travel quota. The central bank directed authorised dealer banks to diversify payment options.
Under the circular, Bangladeshi citizens holding valid visas can purchase tickets settled through international systems. Issuing commercial banks may verify purchase authenticity before adjusting card limits, utilising designated Merchant Category Codes to track qualifying airline transactions across the banking network.
The central bank clarified that the facility excludes domestic airlines booked through foreign platforms operating outside Bangladesh. Foreign currency earned from sales must be calculated and adjusted as remittable surplus under existing exchange regulations before repatriation to foreign airlines.
Signed by Director Dr Md Abu Bakkar Siddique, the directive took immediate effect across all authorised dealer banks. Participating institutions must regularly submit transaction data through Bangladesh Bank's Transaction Monitoring module, maintaining regulatory oversight over outbound airline remittances.
India slaps $445 per tonne duty on Bangladesh jute

India has imposed anti-dumping duties of up to $445 per tonne on Bangladeshi jute products following a trade review, according to an Indian finance ministry notification. The measure penalises shipments of yarn, twine, sacking bags and hessian fabric.
India's Directorate General of Trade Remedies concluded that Bangladeshi exporters injured local industry after imports fell 13 per cent while Indian demand dropped 20 per cent. Unlisted producers face the peak $445 tariff, while 36 listed firms incur duties from $59.
Bangladesh Jute Spinners Association Chairman Tapash Pramanik described the measure as 'one-sided' and 'coercive'. Pramanik said Indian authorities miscalculated subsidies, adding that Bangladesh provides only 3 to 5 per cent assistance on exported yarn and sacking bags.
Six Bangladeshi manufacturers received full exemptions across all product lines, while two secured zero rates for sacking and hessian. Although exports to India fell 18 per cent to 1.17 lakh tonnes, total national jute revenue reached $884 million.
Government to raise $1 billion in maiden sovereign bond issue

Bangladesh is preparing to issue its debut foreign-currency sovereign bond to raise between $500 million and $1 billion within three months.
The transaction marks the country's first entry into the international sovereign debt market.
Fifteen institutional investment firms, including BlackRock, PIMCO and Macquarie, showed preliminary interest following roadshows in Europe and New York. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tanvir Shahriar Ghani said JPMorgan Chase & Co. will manage the offering.
Global borrowing costs recently climbed following a 25 basis point rate hike by the US Federal Reserve. Ghani said the government remains sensitive to capital costs, adding that authorities will proceed cautiously regarding bond pricing amid shifting emerging market yields.
The debt sale still requires final approval from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman before launch. Bangladesh Bank first proposed issuing sovereign debt in 2012, but previous administrations never implemented the measure, leaving the impending sale as Dhaka's debut offering.

Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Masud Khan said on Monday that a unified back-office software system will be introduced to prevent financial irregularities and embezzlement across the capital market, ensuring real-time monitoring of brokerage transactions.
According to BSEC data, financial discrepancies amounting to Tk 492 crore occurred across five brokerage houses, affecting 17,967 investors. Khan said technology-based monitoring is necessary to reconcile bank and client accounts daily and rebuild investor confidence.
Speaking at the Dhaka Stock Exchange, Khan began refund disbursements, with 17,332 individuals, representing 96.47 per cent of affected clients, receiving full compensation. The initial phase covers investors with claims up to Tk 5 lakh.
Discussions have commenced with stock exchanges to deploy the unified system across all brokerage firms. BSEC officials said that remaining claimants with losses exceeding Tk 5 lakh will receive their refunds gradually during subsequent implementation phases.
