Bangladesh seeks removal of Indian trade barriers and duties

Bangladesh called on India to withdraw anti-dumping duties on jute products and remove export restrictions through land ports on Friday. A 10-member delegation raised the demands during the 16th Bangladesh-India Joint Working Group on Trade meeting in New Delhi.

The delegation sought continued tariff preferences under the South Asian Free Trade Area agreement following graduation from the least developed country category. Officials also requested simplified certification procedures under the Bureau of Indian Standards and the withdrawal of anti-dumping duties on polyethylene terephthalate film.

Led by Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Commerce Ayesha Akhter, the delegation sought transit access for freight trucks travelling to Nepal and Bhutan. The team said Indian authorities must improve customs infrastructure, including parking facilities, warehouses and access roads.

India proposed lifting restrictions on cotton yarn exports and easing trade barriers from northeastern states into Bangladesh. Both sides discussed modernising the Akhaura-Agartala route and expanding rail links, while Bangladesh raised the need to activate the CEOs' Forum to accelerate regional cross-border commerce.

PM pledges support for Tk 100-120 crore waste-to-fuel project

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman assured researchers of comprehensive government assistance at his Tejgaon office on Saturday following a demonstration of an innovative project designed to convert human waste and agricultural residues into fuel oil.

Khulna University of Engineering and Technology researchers utilised Hydrothermal Liquefaction technology to produce biocrude at a 50 to 55 per cent laboratory yield, proposing a Tk 100 to 120 crore pilot plant to process up to three tonnes of daily waste.

Project researcher Professor Dr Md Khalekuzzaman said the domestic initiative could simultaneously address severe environmental pollution, significantly reduce national dependence on imported fuel and create new commercial opportunities for large-scale energy production.

According to researchers, successfully scaling the hydrothermal liquefaction technology for commercial production could eventually replace around 10 to 15 per cent of imported crude oil, potentially saving Bangladesh up to Tk 13,000 crore in annual foreign exchange expenditures.

Banking sector needs Tk 60,000 crore annually to recover: BB Governor

Source: UNB

Bangladesh Bank Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman on Saturday said the banking sector requires Tk 60,000 crore annually for five to eight years to recover from structural damage. He spoke at a Bangla QR campaign event organised by ONE Bank at United International University.

The governor said one-third of total funds in the banking system had been stolen before he assumed office, describing widespread capital flight. He said the looted resources could have supported two crore families or financed two mega infrastructure projects like the Padma Bridge.

The governor said standard terminology fails to capture the gravity of the liquidity drain, describing the offence as outright plundering rather than simple theft. He said the responsible groups looted public money across the financial sector.

According to him, stringent legal actions are already underway against individuals involved in money laundering and financial irregularities to hold perpetrators accountable. He said the ongoing legal actions also aim to recover plundered assets across the financial sector.

Bangladesh faces an additional $4.12 billion expenditure on energy and fertiliser imports over seven months due to the ongoing Middle East conflict, Prime Minister's Adviser on Finance and Planning Prof Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir said on Friday.

According to Prof Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, from March to September, the country required an extra $2.21 billion for fuel oil, $1.82 billion for liquefied natural gas and $70 million for fertilisers. He said monthly spending would increase by roughly $600 million if hostilities persist.

Speaking at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, he said the international community failed to take responsibility for economic burdens borne by developing nations. The global organisations demonstrated inaction while vulnerable states absorbed the economic consequences of the crisis.

He said civil society groups and multilateral agencies must prioritise developing country economic protections during the upcoming World Bank and IMF annual meetings in Bangkok. Addressing structural inequality requires confronting skewed political power distributions within public policies.

The government has taken an initiative to create 20,000 agricultural entrepreneurs across Bangladesh to expand exports. Covering 64 districts, the initiative reserves 60 per cent of positions for women alongside 40 per cent for men aged 18 to 35.

Implemented across 208 upazilas under the agriculture ministry's PARTNER project, the scheme provides a 70 per cent subsidy for household food-processing equipment. Authorities will also establish specialised value-chain organisations for five key commodities, including potatoes, mangoes, jackfruit, tomatoes and aromatic rice.

PARTNER Project Coordinator Abul Kalam Azad said emerging entrepreneurs drive future economic progress by achieving self-reliance and creating opportunities for others in society to become self-reliant. He said the initiative will help transform agriculture into a modern, dignified profession.

Agency Programme Director Dr Muhammad Abdullah Al-Farooq said 6,875 individuals have already received business training towards an annual target of 7,000. Authorities have also established 767 Market Actors Business Schools across farming hubs, with plans to open 335 additional potato-focused facilities this year.
