World Bank reports Bangladesh growth slows to 3.4 per cent

Bangladesh's real gross domestic product growth slowed to 3.4 per cent in fiscal 2025-26 amid contracting investment and industrial energy shortages, according to a World Bank report released on Tuesday. The economic expansion fell from 3.5 per cent recorded in the previous fiscal year.

According to the multilateral lender, the national poverty rate climbed to an estimated 22.5 per cent, pushing roughly 21 lakh people below the international poverty line. Meanwhile, private sector credit growth dropped to 4.5 per cent in June, registering its lowest expansion in 33 years.

Banking vulnerabilities intensified as non-performing loans climbed to 33.2 per cent in June, with default ratios reaching 58.9 per cent in Islamic banks. The sector's capital adequacy ratio fell to negative 2.6 per cent, while regulatory forbearance allowed lenders to defer roughly $17 billion in mandatory provisions.

The World Bank projected GDP growth to remain subdued at 3.4 per cent in fiscal 2026-27. The multilateral lender said authorities must expedite banking asset reviews, curtail uncollateralised liquidity support, and redirect universal energy subsidies toward targeted social protection programmes.

Government to cut business startup timeline to 14 days

The government initiated plans on Tuesday to issue unique business identification numbers to entrepreneurs, reducing startup timelines to 14 days. The Commerce Ministry and Invest Bangladesh are jointly designing the package for the single-window platform BanglaBiz.

Entrepreneurs currently face an average wait of 355 days to obtain operational clearances and open import letters of credit following company registration. Invest Bangladesh member Nahian Rahman Rochi said authorities will run mandatory prerequisites in parallel or make approvals post-facto without eliminating regulatory compliance.

Business Initiative Leading Development Chairperson Abul Kasem Khan welcomed the reform but said the initiative must be implemented effectively in practice rather than remaining confined to policy plans. Khan said Bangladesh should draw on regional models like Vietnam.

Officials said initial reform outcomes will emerge within the next month, with full operational deployment expected within roughly one year. Relevant agencies, including fire and environmental authorities, will integrate procedures into a shared digital dashboard to track pending approvals.

Elon Musk regains trillionaire status after $30 billion surge

Elon Musk regained his status as the world's first trillionaire on Monday after surging Tesla and SpaceX share prices lifted his net worth to $1 trillion, according to Forbes. The surge widened his lead over Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

Musk added $30.6 billion on Monday as SpaceX stock jumped over 7 per cent to $171 and Tesla gained over 1 per cent. Over the preceding week, SpaceX rose 17.61 per cent following orbital flights, while Tesla advanced 5.95 per cent.

Musk announced plans to rename SpaceX's artificial intelligence division to SpaceX SI, endorsing US President Donald Trump's preference for the term 'super intelligence'. Trump said tech firms face a 'moral obligation' rather than legal requirements when developing artificial intelligence.

Musk also faces scrutiny ahead of Friday's release of a critical documentary by Alex Gibney in New York. Musk criticised the production, threatening a defamation lawsuit against the director, while former partner Shivon Zilis separately confirmed their separation.

Bangladesh received $8.979 billion in workers' remittances between 1 July and 4 October of the current fiscal year 2026-27, according to Bangladesh Bank data. The total intake marked a 16.2 per cent increase from the $7.726 billion received during the corresponding period of fiscal 2025-26.

According to the central bank data, Bangladesh received $388 million in remittances during the first four days of October, compared with $141 million during the identical timeframe last year. The early October receipts registered a 175 per cent year-on-year growth across the formal banking network.

On 4 October alone, expatriate Bangladeshis sent home $181 million through formal channels, according to the central bank. The continued expansion in remittance inflows is expected to bolster the country's foreign exchange reserves and ease persistent pressure on the national balance of payments.

Government extends market hours to 10 pm for Durga Puja

The government extended retail business hours by two hours across Bangladesh on Monday ahead of Durga Puja, allowing shops and shopping centres to operate until 10:00 pm. According to the Power Division, the extended operational schedule remains effective until 22 October.

Under the directive, commercial establishments can operate daily from 11:00am to 10:00pm instead of the previous 8:00pm deadline. Authorities notified municipal administrations, the Bangladesh Shop Owners Association and utility distributors, including the Bangladesh Power Development Board, to coordinate power management.

The adjustment follows multiple revisions implemented this year amid recurring energy shortages. The government previously reduced market hours to 8:00 pm on 12 August to conserve electricity, after earlier capping operations at 6:00 pm in April and granting temporary extensions before Eid-ul-Azha.

The Power Division said the temporary relaxation will conclude on 22 October. Regular trading schedules will resume on 23 October, requiring shopping centres and markets across the country to reinstate the mandatory 8:00 pm closing time.
